Forestry
Forests cover two-thirds of the total land area in South Carolina and are essential for our state's economy, environment and quality of life. Timber, with a delivered value of $835 million, is South Carolina's most valued crop. South Carolina's Southern Yellow Pine is known for its strength and prized as the hardest of the softwoods that are commercially available.
A great value to the state's economy, South Carolina's forestry industry generates $14 billion annually to the state's economy, employing over 30,000 individuals with a payroll of over $1.24 billion. It's the third largest employer and third highest payroll of South Carolina manufacturing industries. Forest products rank fourth in capital expenditures, investing over $330 million every year. Increasing use of forestlands by hunters and fishermen adds an additional $1.3 billion each year.
